The responsibilities of today's laboratory animal technologists reflect the need for continued education and professional development
Promoting a scientific approach
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A basic knowledge of sound scientific principles and methods should be a minimum requirement for anyone whose work can affect the quality of animals lives or interpretation of scientific data.
Many of today's laboratory animal technologists possess outstanding practical and technical skills. These skills and responsibilities can include; administering anaesthetics, performing surgical procedures, administering test substances using a variety of routes and methods, collection and withdrawal of body fluids and tissues, implanting medical devices, performing hysterectomies, interpreting stages of oestrus and carrying out transgenic techniques, to name a few. In addition, there is also the legal and ethical need to interpret when animals show adverse clinical and/or abnormal behavioural signs and to act accordingly in the interests of animal welfare and study objectives.
Our core and applied bioscience modules can be used to introduce scientific concepts, augment practical and technical skills and to update and build on previous learning. Click here for a discussion on "Why Is Science Important"
